Fun Is Where Formation Happens

You ever notice how the harder you try to remember someone’s name, the faster it runs away? Like, if you asked me right now what the guy’s name was who fixed my AC last week, I’d say, “Uh…starts with a J? Maybe?” Then three hours later—when I’m brushing my teeth—it’s like, “Jerry!” Thanks, brain. Really helpful.

That’s kind of how conversations about faith work too. If you sit down and say, “Okay, family, tonight at 7:00 p.m. we’re going to have a deep spiritual conversation,” it’s almost guaranteed someone’s going to fake a bathroom break or fall asleep. The best moments sneak up on you—when you’re relaxed, laughing, or biking through Newport News Park and your kid suddenly asks, “So what’s heaven like?” You don’t schedule that. It just happens.

My wife likes to say, “Fun is where formation happens.” And honestly, she’s right. This past week our staff had an afternoon with no agenda but fun. Mark and Daniel nearly pulled a hamstring fighting for the title of Northside Bowling Champion while the rest of us just prayed that at least one pin would fall over. But what really happened that day wasn’t just bowling. We were building trust, laughing together, and laying the groundwork for the kind of team that can do meaningful ministry side by side.

That’s why September 14 matters. Northside Day isn’t just hamburgers, inflatables, and seeing how many adults can survive the “Church Clap” dance. It’s an opportunity for relationships to deepen—for new people to feel like they belong, for conversations about faith and life to flow naturally, and for people to discover how their gifts can make a difference.

So here’s the challenge: we need you. Bring a dessert. Help on the grill. Invite that family you met last Sunday. Even if you’re new, this is your chance to plug in. Because when we create space for laughter and connection, God often uses it to open doors for the conversations that really matter.

Grace & Peace,
